A is for Amabie: The epidemic-warding Japanese monster

There’s a legend in Japan that a mermaid-like creature appeared on the shores before an official and foretold the coming of great harvest and disease. It also instructed the man to keep a picture of itself in order to help ward off the disease. This creature, called Amabie, is said to have a beak like a bird, long hair, scales down it’s body, and three legs. Since then, citizens of Japan have obliged by displaying the images of Amabie to ward off disease. Take a look! #アマビエ

Personally, I like to believe that, instead of a beak, it was a brilliant citizen wearing a mask. 😷😄 What an amazing PSA. (On second thought, it could have been one of those beaked masks worn by doctors during the plague in Europe! 😳).

Regardless of the true origin, I appreciate the hope behind the image and the desire to take action when there’s little to be done. So, along that line of thought, I created a coloring sheet just for you!

Print, color, and share the Amabie knowing that all my best hopes and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.

Please also continue to share this and our Kickstarter with friends who’d like to learn more about fun customs in Japan. We’re in our last week and we’re so close!!! Thank you!
